Goshen head coach Dee Hughes was proud on Friday that her Lady Eagles accomplished their goal.

The girls played on the final day of softball season, facing off against Lexington High School in the Class 2A Alabama High School Athletic Association tournament in Montgomery.

And although the Lady Eagles lost 7-0, the coach held her head high after the game, and encouraged her players to do the same.

“It could’ve been a different ball game had our team gotten momentum,” Hughes said.

The Lady Eagles had fought hard to make it to Friday’s game, playing three games in Thursday’s opening round of the tournament. The team easily won the first, defeating Walter Wellborn 5-2, but lost to Mobile Christian before coming back to defeat Prattville Christian 3-2.

“We told the girls they should be proud,” Hughes said after Thursday’s games. “We played on the first day of softball season and will be playing on the final day, as well.”

But Lexington proved too much for the Lady Eagles.

Goshen started the first inning with two hits, but failed to score any runs. The teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Lexington took a three-run lead, aided by three hits and two errors.

“After that inning where the team scored three runs, it seemed like we shut down for a little bit,” Hughes said.

Goshen, despite earning four more hits over the next four innings, couldn’t close the gap. Lexington scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, finishing the game at 7-0.

Shelby Vinson led Goshen at the plate going 2-2 Also recording hits were Haley Hughes, Katherine Thomas, Samantha Roy and Frances Warrick.
