GOSHEN — The Goshen Eagles softball team honored a pair of seniors in its final home game of the 2013 regular season on Thursday.

Brantley knocked off the Eagles, 9-6, as Shelby Vinson and Ashley Tarver had their softball careers celebrated prior to the fifth inning.

Brantley got the scoring started in the first inning with a run after three consecutive singles. Starting pitcher Katie Thomas worked out of the jam by getting a ground ball before striking out two batters.

Goshen took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Haley Hughes led off with a single. After a fly out, Sam Roy, Shelby Vinson and Katie Thomas walked in succession to force in a run. Kaitlyn Gamble also walked to give Goshen the 2-1 advantage.

The Eagle built on their early lead in the second inning. Casey Allen single to start things off and Fran Warrick singled her home later in the inning. Goshen led 3-1.

The lead would not last long however as Brantley scored four runs in the top of the third to reclaim the led 5-3. Goshen would close the gap to just one in the bottom half after Thomas doubled and Hughes picked up the RBI on a single.

After Brantley added three more in the fourth and another run in the sixth, the game was out of reach. Goshen did make a push however with a pair of runs in the sixth.

“We left too many runners on base,” Hughes said. “We just couldn’t come up with a big hit when we needed one.”

The Eagles would leave 11 runners on base for the game including the bases loaded in both the first and fifth innings.

The Eagles will play New Brockton in their opening round game on May 2 in Elba. Game time for Goshen is set for 5 p.m.
