Goshen to host 3-on-3 hoops tournament as fundraiser

The Goshen High School basketball team is inviting the community to lace up their shoes and come play basketball for a good cause.

The Eagles are hosting a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in order to help raise funds for off-season camps. The tournament will be held at the Goshen High School gym on March 30, and will feature two different age divisions.

“We are going to have a 15-and-under bracket, and what we are calling an ‘open’ division,” said Goshen boys basketball head coach Johnny Mitchell. “We want to be an open division because there may be some younger kids out there that want to play with the older guys. They can if they want, but they will also have a bracket for themselves.”

The tournament will be played on half-court, and the winner will be the first team to 16 points or the leader after 15 minutes. Entry fee will be $10 per player, and the funds will help the Goshen Eagles attend camps in the summer.

The camps allow the players to learn from other coaches and players, as well as competing against teams before the season gets started.

“The camps aren’t all work,” said Mitchell. “They get to play against other kids and teams, and kind of get rewarded for all the work. It is also a time to be able to come together, and work on being a basketball team.”

While Mitchell is working on putting the tournament together, he is taking time to work on his jump shot, as he will be participating in the tournament as a player.

“I will most definitely be out there mixing it up a little bit,” said Mitchell with a chuckle. “I have already talked to Coach (Robby, baseball head coach) Kinsaul and we are going to get a couple of other guys, hopefully a little better in shape than us, and enter it. We aren’t as young as others, but we are competitive and will be pulling a little jersey if we have to.”
