The Goshen Lady Eagles hit the ball hard and square for four innings, without much to show for it.

However, the line drives that weren’t falling early in the game began to find gaps in the fifth inning, en route to Goshen’s 8-3 win over Luverne on Monday afternoon.

Goshen took a two run lead to the top of the fifth inning, but saw Luverne’s bats come alive in the inning to tie the game up.

The Tigers used a bloop single to right field and two Goshen errors to bring two runs home in the frame.

In the Eagles half of the fifth, Goshen reeled off three singles to start the inning, put more runners on due to Luverne errors and received a bases-clearing double by Casey Allen to get the lead, and never look back.

“We were hitting it pretty solid all day,” said Goshen head coach Dee Hughes. “We had to make some adjustments, but knew that eventually they would hit the gaps. In the fifth, we were able to bust it open.”

First baseman Shelby Vinson continued swinging a hot bat early in the season.

In the Lady Trojans Classic over the weekened, Vinson batted .734 and went 4-4 on Monday afternoon. Vinson also had 3 RBIs and scored two runs.

Allen also had a big day at the plate, going 2-3 with two doubles and 4 RBIs.

“Shelby is on fire right now,” said Hughes. “She is seeing the ball well right now. Haley (Hughes) hit .500 in the tournament and she kind of got us going there in the fifth to break that tie. All of the girls are swinging the bats well.”

In the circle for Goshen, Lizzie Galloway pitched six innings, striking out seven Tiger batters and scattering five hits.

The Lady Eagles face a quick turnaround as they welcome in the Highland Home Flying Squadron on Tuesday afternoon.
