Trojans aim to keep streaks alive

After a disappointing start to the season, the Troy Trojans have bounced back and are now setting its sights on yet another Sun Belt championship.

Today, the Trojans will look to take another step in that direction as it plays host to conference foe Louisiana-Lafayette.

Coming into the game, Troy is winners of two-straight ball games, after starting the season 1-3, however, as far as conference games, the Trojans have been dominant the past couple seasons, as it is currently riding a 12-game winning streak, with its last loss coming almost two years ago, to Louisiana-Monroe in Nov. of 2008.

The Men of Troy will look to continue that streak against a tough Ragin’ Cajun team tonight, at 6 p.m.

“They have given us some problems with formations and running the ball in the past,” Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. “Their quarterback, (Chris) Masson, is a good player. He can throw the football and they have some weapons.

“They are a team that I thought played pretty well against Oklahoma State at home in a Friday night game,” the coach said. “I think they are hurting a little bit with some injuries, but we have to prepare for their guys because all of them will be back for Troy. We have to get a plan and get going on it.”

ULL enters the game on a losing note, and it fell to Oklahoma Stat last Friday night at home.

Its two wins came against conference foes, North Texas and Arkansas State.

The Trojans trail in the all-time series, 7-6, but Troy has won six of the last seven meetings, with the offense averaging nearly 47 points in the last four games.

And that is a trend that may continue under the lights of Veterans Memorial Stadium Saturday night.

Troy has scored 30 or more points in each game this season, while the Ragin’ Cajuns have given up 30 or more points three times this season, including 50 plus points twice.

A big reason for the productive offense has been thanks to starting quarterback, Corey Robinson.

In just his first year starting, the quarterback has thrown for 1,503 yards and 11 touchdowns, while completing 63 percent of his passes. Robinson was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week this week for his 259 yards, three-touchdown performance against Middle Tennessee State University.

“I can’t do it alone,” Robinson said about the award, “the offensive line has done a fantastic job this season and when you have skilled players like we do, it makes my job easy.”

All season long, the quarterback has talked about how he was waiting for Troy to get a blowout win, like it became accustomed to in 2009.

Against the rival Blue Raiders, a blowout is exactly what happened, thanks to a 42-13 win.

“It felt good to win by that much,” Robinson said.

“We are starting to get more balance and I think you will start to see us click even more as the season goes on because we are inches away from being a very good offense, I think we have a chance to stack up well, not only in the league but with teams around the nation because we have the offensive line and the guys at the skill positions to do that.”

Another impressive statistic going for the Trojans is one that has occurred for almost a decade now.

Since the 2001 season, Troy is 41-5 at home, which is the fourth best winning percentage in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Along with that record, Blakeney is 87-11-1 in all games played in Troy.

“We have been pretty good at home over the years and we need to make sure we don’t forget the legacy that has been set over that period of time,” Blakeney said. “Part of that legacy has been set by the guys that are here right now. We have to get back to work and get our plan in and get our hearts ready for a fight, because it will be a fight.”
