Bulldogs host Abbeville

The Pike County Bulldogs bounced back from a week three loss to Montgomery Academy with a 28-15 win over Southside Selma last Friday. They look to pick up a non-region win this evening against familiar foe Abbeville.

The Bulldogs (3-1) answered many of coach Fred Holland’s questions during last Friday night’s win and they hope it carries over against the Yellow Jackets.

“It was very big,” Holland said. “Our guys realized that we didn’t play as well as we should have. They kind of regrouped and we went back to the drawing board. We made some changes here and there and it worked for the best.”

The Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs have played one another for many years, despite not always being in the same region. It’s a game that both squads look forward too.

“The kids are familiar with them,” Holland said. “It’s not that difficult to get up for them. It’s a lot of fun. They always bring a pretty good crowd. This year they are very excited because they are undefeated.”

The Yellow Jackets are coming off a tight 26-20 win over Geneva County last week, but have outscored their opponents 136-34 thus far.

“They do a lot of good things as far as running the ball, passing the ball and special teams,” Holland said. “The kids are very familiar with one another. It’s an exciting time. Our guys look forward to it and they are excited about playing.”

One player that won’t be playing Friday will be quarterback Jaidyn Wilson, who left last week’s game with an apparent leg injury. When asked when his quarterback would return, Holland said it would be a while.

While he did not mention who would take over under center, the Bulldogs saw both Jahzarian Lampley and Kevon Harris take snaps at quarterback to close out the game.

“Our guys accept the challenge regardless of who we move and where we move them,” Holland said. “They have a willing attitude to do what we ask of them. We made some minor changes here and there, but overall I think the positions that some of the guys are in will really help the team. We are going to keep working.”

The teams met a season ago and it was the Bulldogs who came out on top 27-6. This evening’s game will begin at 7 p.m. from Bulldogs Stadium in Brundidge.
