From a torch run to a fireworks-studded opening ceremony, the 2012 Alabama Special Olympics got under way on Friday.

The day began with the arrival of the torch in the city of Troy courtesy of a collection of law enforcement officials from throughout the state, in the 23^rd annual Law Enforcement Torch run. Later that evening the official opening ceremonies and lighting of the torch took place at Larry Blakeney Field at Troy University.

More than 1,200 athletes are competing in the weekend games, which have been hosted at Troy University for six years.

“It went very well and we were pleased with it,” Special Olympics Co-Chairman Herb Reeves said. “We had a lot of spectators come out.”

The Olympic Games will begin this morning at several different locations. Troy University will be the site of softball, bocce and track and field, the Troy Sportsplex will host swimming and gymnastics events, Fort Rucker will be reserves for golf, Saddle Creek Ranch in Brundidge will hold equestrian events and Montgomery will be bowling.

A victory dance tonight wraps-up the activities for participants.

“We expect everyone to have a good time and enjoy themselves this year,” Reeves said. “Everyone is a winner this weekend just by participating in the events.”

All games for the Special Olympics will begin at 9 a.m., with the Victory Dance at 7 p.m. in Sartain Hall.

Closing ceremonies will follow on Sunday at 9 a.m. in Sartain Hall, and everyone is invited to attend.

“We’re very glad to have the Olympics here at Troy,” Reeves said. “We like having everyone here for the events, and even though it’s a lot of hard work it’s always worth it.”
