Those looking to start that summer-sunned look might find what they are looking for at one of Troy’s newest businesses.

Renaissance Tanning and Gifts, located in the Brundidge Street Plaza, has been open for around a month and is looking to provide a unique brand of services for its customers.

Falon Underwood runs the day-to-day operations of the store, which is owned by her parents Steven and Vicki Underwood.

“We offer, mainly, tanning,” Falon said. “We have 10 tanning beds.”

Falon said the store offers tanning services in three different levels.

Each level refers to a different type of tanning bed and the amount of time a customer can use the bed on that particular level.

Level 1 tanning beds have ultraviolet bulbs only and have a time limit of 20 minutes.

Level 2 tanning beds have facial bulbs, ultraviolet bulbs and bronzing bulbs and have a time limit of 12 to 15 minutes. Falon said that the store has one level 2 stand up bed called a hex bed.

Level 3 tanning beds have a 10 to 12 minute time limit and are a little more powerful than level 2 beds.

“We’ve been doing pretty good,” she said. “We’ve been getting maybe 5 new customers a day. Our prices are pretty cheap compared to most places here in Troy.”

She also said the majority of her customers are from the university.

“We get a lot of students from Troy,” she said. “Most of our customers are college-age.”

Falon said to tan customers must be at least 14 years old.

But tanning is only one part of the store’s offerings.

“We also sell gifts,” she said. “We have purses, picture frames, jewelry, candles and things like that.”

“We just wanted to find something unique that Troy didn’t offer,” Falon said.

She said that the store offers some unique products.

“I have hand-painted frames that were featured in Southern living magazine,” she said. “We have soy candles. There’s only one other place here in Alabama that sells them, but they’re made here in the U.S. They’re a lot cleaner than regular candles. They don’t leave a black ring.”

Falon said the painted frames can be personalized and are ordered from Feel Good Frames. She also said that the candles are ordered from Lakeshore Candle Company in Michigan.

Falon also said that she offers different kinds of jewelry.

“I go to Atlanta and get a lot of stuff,” she said. “We order from Season’s Jewelry (in Tennessee).”

She said the jewelry is versatile, and you can attach different kinds of pendants to a necklace.

“You have all these different kinds of things that clip on and you can make 10 necklaces out of one,” she said.

Renaissance Tanning and Gifts is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is also open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed on Sunday.
