Goshen Volunteer Fire Department saw a huge donation Thursday morning from a company who knows well what it takes to bravely step forward to save others.

The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation gave the local volunteer station $16,195 worth of equipment they didn’t have had the means to purchase on their own. The department will now have eight new sets of firefighting turnout gear that will replace outdated equipment and provide firefighters with a safe uniform to use during training operations and life-threatening situations.

Since 2005, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has donated more than $337,000 to public safety entities in Alabama.

“Our Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation’s support of our local heroes impacts us all,” said Gene Yager, franchisee of the local Firehouse Subs.

Each restaurant recycles leftover, five-gallon pickle buckets and sells them to customers for $2. That money, along with funds gathered through donation canisters and customers who “round up” their bills, goes into the Safety Foundation’s mission to support firefighters.

The non-profit Safety Foundation was created in 2005 and has given more than $3.5 million to hometown fire, police and EMS organizations.

Firehouse Subs was founded by former firefighting brothers Chris and Robin Sorensen. Combined, their family boasts 200 years of firefighting service.
