The Pike County Chamber of Commerce’s Pike County Farm City Committee is not immune to the restrictions of COVID-19.  So, the committee has been meeting at the pavilion at Murphree Park where social distancing is easily accomplished.

However, the coronavirus continues to dictate how the committee approaches its long list of planned 2020 Farm City Week events.

Dana Sanders, Pike County Chamber of Commerce president, led the committee’s discussion of ideas on how to host the 2020 Farm City Banquet.

After considering several ideas, the committee decided on a power point presentation of all Farm City award winners with Jerry Miller as the emcee.

“The presentation will be steamed via Troy Cable and the Pike County Chamber’s YouTube channel,” Sanders said. “The presentation will also be featured in The Messenger.”

Nominations are now open for the 2020 Farm City Awards.

“There are many members of our community who make outstanding contributions to agriculture,” Sanders said. “The nominations are open and we encourage nominations from the community.”

Nomination applications are available at the Pike County Chamber of Commerce Office, 101 Church Street, Troy or via email, www.pikecoc.com.

Application nominations are also available at the Pike/Bullock Farm Service Agency and the Pike County Extension Office. The 2020 Farm City Awards nominations may be made in the following areas: Beef, poultry, timber, row crops, conservation, young farmer, youth, specialty crop, service to agriculture and business.

The deadline for the award nominations is October 23.  For more information, call the 566-2294.

Troy Bank & Trust will sponsor the poster, essay and multimedia contests for students in schools throughout the county.

Two popular Pike County Farm-City events are the annual Farm City Tour and the Farm City Job Swap.

The Farm-City tour will be at Rex Lumber Company on October 20. Russell Johnson, broker/timer buyer and Pike County commissioner, and Marcus Paramore, director of government relations at Troy University and Troy City Council member, will swap jobs for a day on October 29.

Abby Peters, Pike County Extension coordinator, said the Touch-A-Tractor event for kids will be November 9-13 at the local elementary schools.

The Farm City Committee will show its appreciation to members of the community for their longtime contributions to agriculture with Pike County Bama in a Box gifts.
