Post 70 17U wins championship at Wiregrass Cardinals Invitational

The American Legion Post 70 baseball team finished off a championship in the Wiregrass Cardinals Invitational on Sunday when they knocked off the Wiregrass Cardinals 6-1 to finish off a championship weekend in Dothan.

After opening the weekend with a 12-2 win over the Opp Yardgoats, Post 70 picked up wins against the All-Star A’s and Wiregrass 15U to secure a trip in the championship.

Tanner Hall got the start for Post 70 in the championship game. Hall pitched the first five innings of the contest without allowing an earned run. J.D. Wilson and Harrison Mims pitched the final two innings. They combined to strikeout three batters.

Parker Sessions, Bailey Sparrow, Lane Ballard, Harrison Mims, Jackson Pierce and Drew Shiver led post 70 at the plate. All of whom had multi-hit games for Post 70 in the championship. Sessions finished recorded three hits including a triple and he had two stolen bases along with an RBI.

The American Legion Post 70 19U team was also in action over the weekend. They advanced to the championship of the Gary (Tiny) Bernath Memorial Wiregrass Cardinals Baseball Tournament They fell to the North Florida Blacksox on Sunday morning.

After jumping ahead 4-0 in the first inning, Post 70 fell to the Blacksox 7-6 after North Flordia scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning.

Grayson Stewart and Logan Ross both pitched three innings for Post 70. Stewart let up two runs, one of which was earned, while Ross allowed four runs, three of which were earned. Matt Snell and Bryce Peavy also pitched for Post 70.

Davis Allen and Cole Smith each picked up two hits in the loss. Smith added an RBI. Jake Sam Tomkins, Killingsworth and Snell each picked up one hit.

The Post 70 17U team will return to action this week when they play in two mid-week games.

The 19U squad will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to take on Ozark in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
