The Pike County Lady Bulldogs volleyball team overcame a first set loss to Slocomb on Thursday afternoon before rattling off three straight wins to knockoff the Red Tops with 25-22, 26-24 and 25-23 wins.

The win for the Bulldogs improves their record on the season to 7-4.

“We have been bad in starting positively,” said head coach Todd Reynolds. “It’s not how you start it’s how you finish. It was two very evenly matched teams. Every single set was contested, but we stepped it up.”

Reynolds credited the win to the hustle of his players throughout the match.

“We did a good job at keeping some balls alive,” Reynolds said. “Our spike game was pretty good. During clutch time, our net play gave us some really good blocks. That was a big win. You want games like that but you want to win them.”

Precious Vaznaian had 16 kills and three aces. Senkeithia Thompson had three blocks, four aces and 18 assists. Keeyah Rodgers finished the match with seven blocks, five kills and 10 assists, while Mercedes Harvis had 10 kills.

The Bulldogs will be back in action next Thursday against Providence.

JV Trojans knock out Brew Tech

It took three sets, but the Charles Henderson junior varsity Trojans knocked off Brew Tech Thursday night.

“I am so proud of them,” said head coach Lana Johnson. “Our setter moved up to varsity and we had to change our setting for these games. I had three eighth graders playing on my team tonight. They have improved tremendously this year and they wanted this really bad.”

With the win, the Trojans improve to 14-8 and their confidence continues to grow.

“It proved to me that the girls can keep up with the best,” Johnson said. “Our serving was awesome tonight. Ashlyn Shaver served 20 points in a row and that was pretty big.”
