The Pike Patriots fell behind early and couldn’t catch up as they fell 10-2 to Abbeville on Monday.

“Today was disappointing for us,” said head coach Allen Ponder. “Coming off spring break I thought we would come back rejuvenated, with a lot of energy, but we came out flat today.

“Abbeville has a very good baseball team. If you don’t show up ready to play that is what is going to happen. We got our butts kicked today.”

Pike fell behind early.

“They did a good job at getting two hits each inning,” Ponder said. “We didn’t do a very good job at throwing strikes early, and they took advantage of it.”

Ponder said mental mistakes also hurt their chances to win.

Jade Sikes made his first start on the mound and lasted two innings before being replaced by Wood Jinright who went the remaining five innings.

“Jade struggled a little bit throwing strikes,” Allen said. “He is young and just a freshman. He just had one of those days where he couldn’t find the strike zone.”

The Patriots scored one run in the second inning when Adam Grice doubled. Grice came around to score on groundouts by Wood Jirnright and Murphy Renfroe. The Patriots added their second run when Hayes Lee led off the inning with a double and later scored on a ground out by Reed Jinright.

Hayes Lee and Grice finished the game with two hits for the Patriots. Kiegan Simmons finished the game with a double.

The Patriots will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Escambia in a double header starting at 3:30 p.m.

“We have to bounce back that is the only option we have,” Ponder said. “If we sweep … we still have the opportunity to play for the area. (Escambia) is very big for us, and if we come out flat we don’t deserve to win the game.”
