Every 80 seconds, a woman dies from heart disease.

One of three deaths among women is from heart disease.

But all of the could change, said Annette Toney, chair of the Pike County Heart Association’s “Go Red Day.”

“Eighty percent of cardiovascular and stroke events may be prevented through education and action,” Toney said. “That’s why it is so important to wear red on Friday, which is ‘National Go Red for Women Day.’ The first Friday of February is designated as a day to raise awareness of heart disease in women. By wearing red on Friday, we are encouraging every woman to schedule a well-woman visit as a preventive measure,” Toney said. “A well-woman checkup reviews overall health and could catch any health issues that might be of concern. A well-woman visit to your doctor could mean the prevention of a heart attack or stroke.”

Thirty local businesses are participating in “Go Red” Day and their employees will be wearing red on Friday.

“We are encouraging all of those who wear red on Friday to take photos and put them on facebook or send them by email and let’s paint our community red on ‘National Go Red for Women Day,’” Toney said.

The Pike County Heart Association has “Go Red” T-shirts available. The shirts may be purchased in the mapping office at the Pike County Courthouse. The office is located in the lower level of the courthouse or by calling Toney at 566-7270. The short sleeve tees are $10 and $11 and the long sleeves are $15 and $16 depending on size.
