Derrick Brewster, assistant dean of student services, said Needtobreathe will reach out to a variety of ages, especially those in the 18-45 age group.

“Troy University elected to bring Needtobreathe to campus because the Christian rock band does reach out to so many,” Brewster said. “Needtobreathe has a lot of notoriety from the music market success of their albums.”

Needtobreathe was featured on the cover of CCM Magazine and the band’s albums have debuted as high as one and three on Christian Albums and Rock Album charts.

The band was nominated for two Dove Awards in 2008.  In 2009, Needtobreathe’s “Washed by the Water,” won the Dove Award for “Rock/Contemporary Song of the Year.”

Brewster said Needtobreathe was one of the top five concert choices recorded in a survey conducted on campus in the fall.

“As a result of that survey, Needtobreathe was our choice for the spring concert,” he said. “We are expecting a large crowd for the concert and it should be a big night on campus.

Brewster said Y-102 will do a live remote from campus until 7 p.m. and some free tickets will be given during that time.

Ben Rector, a Nashville-based musician, will open for Needtobreathe.

“Conversation,” a song on Rector’s self-titled EP, won the grand prize in the pop category of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in 2006. Ben Rector is the youngest person to ever win the award for the pop category.

“This is the first concert at Trojan Arena and more concerts are planned, one per semester,” Brewster said. “Trojan Arena is a multi-purpose facility and we want to find ways to bring non sports-related events to the facility.”

Brewster said Trojan Arena has been the site for graduation ceremonies. The Hall of Fame Banquet was a big event at the arena.
