A cleanup campaign, recreation programs and improvement projects dominated discussions at the Goshen City Council meeting on Tuesday.
The Recreation Center’s baseball league board asked that the council consider taking control of the league next season. The current board’s children have all outgrown the league and they want to move on, said City Clerk Traci Shaver.
She said the league recommended applying for a grant like Brantley has that would pay for a recreation director.
“That might be a summer project that we can afford,” said Mayor Jack Waller.
The Little League baseball and softball fields got a facelift, courtesy of donated paint and the county. “When you see the sheriff, thank him. He let three inmates come and paint it,” Waller said.
The council also talked about the upcoming “Don’t drop it on Alabama” cleanup campaign April 19-26.
“That’s where they furnish the bags and volunteers go pick up trash along the sides of the road,” Waller said.
To help make the effort a success, council members plan to solicit help from organizations they have helped, such as the softball team.
The council also made plans to replace a fence that surrounds the trashcans at Goshen Elementary School. “Twenty years ago, we built a fence and that fence is just dilapidated,” Waller said.
Someone donated $400 to the project, which paid for one panel of vinyl fencing. The rest will cost about $1,500 to install.
Waller said the project would help the school and would keep high winds from blowing trash into neighboring yards.
Councilman Darren Jordan asked that a letter be drafted and sent to Pike County Schools regarding a safety issue they have been trying to resolve for months.
Goshen High School’s new gymnasium needs a box with a key that would give firefighters access to the building should they ever respond to an emergency after school hours. The box would cost about $350.
In other business, the council:

• Approved the use of $5,200 to fix curbing on Eagle Circle. The money will come from the town’s streets department;
• Voiced support of draft beer service in Pike County. There are no businesses in Goshen that will benefit from the ordinance;
• Approved applying for a water and water meter grant;
• Approved sponsoring a Little League baseball team;
• Approved sponsorship of a Child Advocacy Center event in April; and
• Approved the purchase of new town stationery.
