Whether you’re looking for a “Disco Peanut” or “Black and White Affair,” you can find a unique way to ring in 2014.

Chris Rich and his wife, Sara Dismukes, opened studio 116 a year and a half ago in downtown Brundidge, their mission was to grow community through the arts.

To do so, the studio’s co-directors have offered a variety of performance events, poetry readings, art workshops, markets, lectures and an ever-changing art gallery.

And, on New Year’s Eve 2012, the couple hosted the first ever Peanut Drop countdown to the New Year with expectations for it to become a New Year’s Eve tradition in the town that is “peanut proud.”

“Brundidge had two of the earliest peanut butter mills in the Southeast and is well known for its annual Peanut Butter Festival,” Rich said. “So the peanut is a part of the town’s heritage. And, too, the peanut carving at the Tupper Lightfoot Memorial Library is my favorite statue. So, Sara and I thought a peanut drop would be the thing to mark the countdown to a new year.”

The 2012 Peanut Drop was a big success and, certainly, big enough to warrant making the “drop” an annual event at studio 116.

So, on Tuesday, studio 116 will host its second annual Disco Peanut New Year’s Eve bash and everyone, peanut connoisseur or not, is invited.

“We’re bringing back Disco Peanut to welcome in 2014,” Rich said. “DJ Ed will join us again with original vinyl disco. We’ll have the mirror ball and the fog machine going, the photo booth set up and lots of prizes for costumes and more all evening long.”

Starting at 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, studio 116 will have its Kids’ Disco Dance party. Admission is by donation, with all proceeds going to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

“This will be a mini version of our Disco Peanut party and will include the Disco Peanut Drop at 8:40 p.m. for the kids and whoever else can’t stay awake until midnight.”

At 9 p.m., the adult party will begin. Admission is $8 or two for $15.

“We’ll set up a pot luck buffet and everyone is invited to bring their favorite snacks and drinks,” Rich said. “DJ Ed will keep us dancing with lots of disco classics. Then, at midnight, we’ll stop traffic on Main Street to watch the Disco Peanut Drop.”

The giant mirrored peanut will be dropped from the top of studio 116 and Old Father Time will give way to the New Year 2014 and all the hope and promise it brings.

For folks seeking a different feel, Sips on the Square in downtown Troy is hosting a New Year’s Eve “Black and White Affair on the Square” from 9 p.m. until after the ringing in of the New Year.

Jamie and Lindsey Taylor want the event to be more than a typical night out on the town.

“We don’t want the ‘Black and White Affair on the Square’ to be too formal but we do want it to be something special,” Lindsey Taylor said. “We have a special night planned for New Year’s Eve in downtown Troy. Sips on the Square will be a beautiful and intimate setting for a special night.”

Tickets to the event will be $30 each and will include hors d’ouevres and wine on the hour.

Taylor said the doors of Sips on the Square will open at 8 p.m. but the hors d’ouevres and wine parings will not begin until 9 p.m. The hors d’ouevres will be unique and tasty.

The first paring at 9 p.m. will be cheeses and a specific wine. At 10 p.m. the pairing will feature vegetables and a different wine. The 11 p.m. paring will be a primarily shrimp and wine paring. When the clock strikes midnight, the paring will be chocolates and fruits and yet another wine.

“After midnight, we serve a light breakfast,” Taylor said. “Those who would like to order from the menu may do so. A ‘Black and White Affair on the Square’ will be a fun and unique way to ring in the New Year. We’re looking forward to New Year’s Eve and invite everyone to join us on the square in downtown Troy.”
