The Troy 10U All-Star basketball team was one of six teams to compete in the 2020 ARPA West District Tournament in Andalusia over the weekend. By the end of the tournament, Troy knocked off Opp to claim the district championship.

Troy’s tournament began with a win over Enterprise on Saturday morning. By day’s end they had wins over Greenvill and Opp.

“We went down there and took over,” Head coach Jermaine Johnson said. “I figured it was going to be a really good bracket. We had to play Enterprise and Greenville was the district champion last year. It was a good accomplishment.”

The Troy team entered the tournament largely inexperienced. Of the 10 players on the roster, four of them are playing basketball for the first time.

“We really only brought one player back that played last year,” Johnson said.

Troy has a team this season that features plenty of strengths.

“We can do it all,” Johnson said. “Carter (Ford) and Jermani (Johnson) can take the ball and take it down low. Damien (Williams), Kellen Stewart, Landen Flowers, they can do whatever needs to be done with the ball. We got a good team. We were able to beat the best that this district had to offer.”

Troy now advances to the ARPA State Tournament on March 13-15. The tournament will feature a double-elimination style tournament.

Defense will be an area of focus for Troy over the next few days in practice.

“We are going to work on defense,” Johnson said. “We did pretty good at rebounding and picking up our man, but we had our hands down a lot on defense.”

Johnson is joined on the coaching staff by Alex May and Tommy Stewart. Players include Landen Flowers, Carter Ford, Amarion Greenwood, Jermani Johnson, Caleb Potts, ZiKhyrien Reynolds, Kellen Stewart, Asa Thompson, Elijah Warren and Damien Williams.
