The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans got the rematch they were clamoring for. The Trojans will travel to Montgomery on Saturday morning to take on Ramsay in the Class 5A Regional Semifinals.

The Trojans fell to Ramsay in the regional round of the state tournament last season.

Coming off a strong season, head coach Dyneshia Jones and the rest of the Trojans are eager to return the favor.

“The girls are all feeling good about the game,” Jones said. “We’re having great practices and we are still doing the norm like watching film. Overall we’re doing great.”

The Trojans fell to Ramsay after holding a 10-point lead at halftime last season. The lead quickly evaporated and the Trojans fell in a low-scoring contest 44-42.

“We are using it as motivation,” Jones said. “We know how many points we lost by. When a team beats us it gives us a reason to want to beat them. It’s going to be a fun and exciting game and hopefully it ends with Charles Henderson coming out on top.”

Ramsay smothered the Trojans with a suffocating defense that forced 24 turnovers. The Trojans expect that again this season.

“That’s the type of team they are,” Jones said. “We prepared for that and we prepared for it last year. It just didn’t’ turn out the way we wanted it to turn out. There were a lot of mistakes made in the game. You can’t make mistakes with two championship teams playing. The one that makes the least amount of mistakes is going to win the ball game.”

Ramsay finished the regular season as the Class 5A Area 8 winner. They knocked off Clay Central 123-20 in the sub-regional round. It was a result that coach Jones and the rest of the Trojans were happy to see.

“We were excited,” Jones said. “We would have taken on anybody, but we are excited and ready. We are really anxious about it.”

The postseason is a different stage for most players compared to the regular season. They go from playing in their home gym to a bigger arena. In this case the Trojans will play in Garrett Coliseum for the second year in a row.

“They’re used to it and they have adapted to it compared to some of the other teams,” Jones said. “They are content with what’s going on. They know what they have to accomplish. It’s going to be bigger in there. The starting lineup will know how it is. They played there last year. Three of the girls played in the state championship. The atmosphere for them is the same.”

Tip-off is scheduled for 9 a.m. at Garrett Coliseum. The winner of the game will play again in the region finals against the winner of Sylacauga and Valley on Wednesday beginning at noon.
