The start of the 2020 college softball season is just over a week away and the Trojans have their sights on making a run in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Sun Belt Conference announced on Wednesday that the Trojans have been picked to finish second in the conference by the coaches. It marks the first time the Trojans have been picked as high as second since 2010.

The Trojans sit behind only Louisiana, who is also ranked in the top 10 nationally by many polls. The Cajuns were picked to finish first unanimously.

“I am just really excited to take the field with this team on February 7,” head coach Beth Mullins said. “Being selected to finish second is great, but we are really just trying to take this season one pitch at a time and one game at a time. When you do that, you don’t get caught up in the rankings or get distracted from your goals.”

Following Louisiana and Troy in the preseason poll are Texas-Arlington, Texas State, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, South Alabama, Louisiana Monroe and Georgia State.

Senior infielder Katie Webb was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Team. As a junior, Webb finished with a .355 batting average to go along with 12 extra base hits and 32 runs batted in. She was the only Trojan to start in all 57 games last season. She was named to the First Team All-Sun Belt squad following the season.

“I am really excited for Katie, especially for it to be her senior year,” Mullins said. “She has been so consistent throughout her career here at Troy, and I think this honor reflects that.”

The Trojans open up the 2020 season on Friday, February 7 when they host the Trojan Classic. They will open up against Lipscomb at 3 p.m. they will finish day one against College of Charleston beginning at approximately 5:30 p.m.
