Patriots take on the Mustangs

While many games have been moved up to Thursday because of weather, the Pike Liberal Arts Patriots have a scheduled game this evening in Montgomery against Success Unlimited.

The Patriots will take on the Mustangs in their final road game of the season.

The Patriots have kept their practice schedule largely the same despite the shortened week.

“We have had a typical week,” head coach Gene Allen said. “We had a typical Monday and Tuesday practice. Instead of having a walk through like we do on Thursday, we just had a normal practice today. I feel like we have gotten a lot better.”

The Patriots have battled injuries all season long. Because of those injuries, a lot of younger players have received meaningful playing time, something that Allen believes will help his team in the future.

“Younger guys have gotten a lot better,” Allen said. “We are just getting outmanned sometimes when we are playing a lot of seniors and juniors on other teams. I can see a lot of strides in these kids and a lot of confidence. It will bode well for next year.”

The Patriots hope to close out their road schedule on a high note this evening when they take on a Success Unlimited team that is 1-7 on the season and coming off a 41-18 loss to Macon-East last Friday night.

Despite the record, Allen believes the Patriots will have to contend with a very athletic Mustangs team.

“They’re a spread team and they have some very good athletes,” Allen said. “Defensively, they run to the ball well; they can run. It’s going to be a challenge for us to make sure we are where we need to be.”

The Patriots knocked off the Mustangs 7-6 last season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at True Devin Field in Montgomery.
