Eagles return home to host area tournament

The Goshen Eagles varsity volleyball team begins postseason play on Tuesday afternoon when they host the 2019 Class 2A Region 6 Tournament.

The Eagles finished the season as the regular season Area 6 champions after finishing the area schedule with a 5-1 record. They finished the season with a 17-17 overall record.

“It’s good to host,” Eagles head coach Amy Warrick said. “Hosting it means it’s at your house. It’s always special to play your last games at home. It will help with the nerves, but it always helps to be at home for the area tournament.”

The Eagles have advanced all the way to the state tournament for the fifth consecutive season in 2019. For them to continue that trend, they will have to continue their winning ways beginning in the area tournament. This year’s team has seven seniors, but despite the older players, the Eagles lack experience.

“This is a team that is old in years, but young in experience,” Warrick said. “A lot of these girls haven’t played leading up to their senior year. I either have one extreme or the other. We either have seniors trying to do too much or ninth graders that are trying to panic because they are so young. It’s hard to keep a good balance. We are being calm with them.”

The Eagles will be joined in the tournament by two-seeded Luverne, three-seeded Highland Home, fourth-seeded Calhoun and fifth-seeded Central.

“It’s the first time that Calhoun and Central have a volleyball team,” Warrick said. “It’s new for us to have five teams in our area. Luverne is the second seed and Highland Home is the three seed. Luverne is playing good volleyball right now. It’s anybody’s tournament. It just depends on what team shows up for us and how our nerves are. It could go either way.”

Calhoun will take on Central to begin the tournament at 3:30 p.m. Goshen will take on the winner beginning at 4:30. The championship match will begin at approximately 6 p.m. The champion and runner-up will both advance to the region tournament.
