Patriots win season opener in dramatic fashion

After being postponed on Friday night, the Pike Liberal Arts Patriots won a thrilling 34-27 win over Morgan in double overtime in the season opener on Saturday.

The Patriots and Senators played much of the first quarter before lightning and rain forced a postponement with the Patriots leading 3-0.

Chip Faircloth scored on the first play of the second overtime to give the Patriots a season-opening win.

Trailing 7-3, Patriot quarterback Drew Nelson connected with Jayden Jordan for a 17-yard touchdown, putting Pike up 10-7 midway through the second quarter.

The defense played a factor on the next possession when they recovered fumble. One play later, Nelson threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to senior Davis Allen to give the Patriots a double-digit lead at 24- 7.

It was the first of two touchdowns for Allen in the game. Nelson connected with Allen for a 93-yard touchdown.

Allen finished the game with six catches for 198 yards. Nelson finished the game 11-25 with 284 passing yards.

The Patriots will be back in action next Friday when they host Crenshaw Christian beginning at 7 p.m.
