Trojans knock off Jackson

A six-run fifth inning lifted the Charles Henderson Lady Trojans to a 18-1 win over Jackson in the opening game of the Class 5A South Regional in Gulf Shores.

Already leading 2-0 heading into the top of the second inning, the Trojans increased their lead to seven runs with a five-run second inning. Madison Cain scored on an error and Dakota Berry stole home to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead. After Heather Maxwell scored on an error, Emma Kirkpatrick hit a two-run home run to center field, giving the Trojans the 7-0 lead.

After Jackson cracked the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the second, the Trojans tacked on two more runs in the top of the third. Cain scored on an error and Berry scored on a fielder’s choice by Maxwell, bringing the score to 9-1.

The Trojans added three more runs in the fourth to take a comfortable 12-1 lead. Sydni Garrett hit the second home run of the day for the Patriots in the fourth. Stella Gilbreath had an RBI single and Barry stole home for the second time.

In their six-run fifth inning, the Lady Trojans had RBI singles by Kirkpatrick, Sadie Leverette, Berry and Maxwell. AJ May also brought in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Garrett got the start and pitched the game’s first three innings. Kirkpatrick pitched the final two innings.
