Trojans advance to regionals with second place finish

The Charles Henderson Lady Trojans advanced to the regional tournament after picking up two wins in the AHSAA Area 3 Tournament on Tuesday.

The Trojans picked up wins over Carroll and Greenville, but couldn’t get by Rehobeth in either of their games on Tuesday.

The Lady Trojans got their day off on a high note when they knocked off Greenville in round one 10-0 in six innings.

Senior pitcher Sydni Garrett pitched a no-hitter in her six innings and the Trojans scored in all but two innings, including four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to officially put the game out of reach.

Garrett allowed one walk, but struck out 12 batters.

After picking up a run on an AJ May single in the second inning, the Trojans broke the game open with three more runs in the third. Garrett hit a single home run and Madison Cain and Dakota Berry scored on a wild pitch.

The Trojans scored two more runs in the fifth and scored their final four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sadi Leverette had a RBI single and the Trojans had two runners score on either a passed ball or wild pitch. Mykyia Milton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the inning.

The Trojans finished with game one with 11 hits. Garrett finished 3-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Emma Kirkpatrick and McKenzie Cain each had two hits, while Heather Maxwell and Leverette each had one.

The win sent the Trojans into the winner’s bracket where they matched up with tournament host Rehobeth, who knocked off the Trojans 11-4.

The Trojans scored all four of their runs in the first inning. Rehobeth immediately answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and pulled away with a three-run third inning and a four-run sixth inning.

Kirkpatrick got the start for the Trojans. The senior pitched the game’s first two innings and allowed four total runs, only one of which was earned. Garrett pitched the remaining four innings for the Trojans.

The Trojans finished with four hits. Maxwell, Kirkpatrick, Madison Stewart and Berry all had hits.

The Trojans went up to the plate just twice in their 16-0 win over Carroll. They scored 15 runs in the first and another in the second and won the game in just three innings. The Trojans sent 20 batters to the plate in the inning and racked up nine hits including three doubles, two of which came off the bat of Maxwell. Kirkpatrick had the other double in the inning.

The Trojans finished with 10 hits in the win. Maxwell, Kirkpatrick and Cain all had two hits, while Garrett, Stewart, Berry and May all had one. Maxwell added four RBI, while Stewart had three.

The Trojans’ dream of an area championship came to an end with their second loss to Rehobeth in the tournament final.

The Trojans offense was held to one hit and Rehobeth took advantage thanks to a seven-run second inning and six-run third inning.

Berry had Charles Henderson’s lone hit.
