Two local baseball players will represent their schools and Pike County in the 2019 Alabama High School Athletic Association North/South All-Star game in Montgomery.

Goshen pitcher McGwire Stanley will join Charles Henderson catcher Cole McWhorter in Montgomery during the 23 annual AHSAA North-South All-Star Week.

McWhorter led the Trojans to the second round of the playoffs in his first season at Charles Henderson. McWhorter led the Trojans to an area championship and a 29-8 record.

After starting his high school career at Pike Liberal Arts, McWhorter finished his junior season with a .333 average with three home runs, 40 RBI and seven doubles.

“Cole has been a huge asset to our team this year,” said head coach Matt Whitton. “He is a true leader for our team behind the plate. He came in and worked into his role for us this year and was a big help for us offensively and defensively. It is a huge accomplishment for him to be selected for the North-South All-Star game in Montgomery.”

Stanley did a little bit of everything for the Eagles this season and finished with a spot in the all-star game.

“I’m proud of him,” said Goshen head coach Robby Kinsaul. “You can tell when hard work is rewarded. I am very proud of him and his family for this accomplishment.”

Stanley not only pitched, but played in the middle of the infield at second as well as shortstop.

“He can play multiple positions,” Kinsaul said. “He played a lot of second base, that is probably the position he would fit into at the next level. Whoever gets him is going to get an outstanding player and worker. He can play center field as well.”

Stanley continues a recent trend of Eagles making the all-star game. Former Eagle Cory Peterson was the most recent player from Goshen to make the game.

“That’s big for our program and big for our school,” Kinsaul said.

Stanley and McWhorter will have a familiar head coach in their dugout in July. After his first full season at Charles Henderson, coach Whitton was selected to be head coach of the south team.

“I’m completely shocked and honored to be selected to coach in the game,” Whitton said.

The exact date and time of the all-star game will be announced at a later date.
