Lady Patriots sweep Springwood on senior day

The Pike Liberal Arts Lady Patriots swept a doubleheader against Springwood on Thursday night in Troy. A five-run fourth inning lifted the Patriots to a 6-3 win in game one. In game two the Patriots scored eight runs in the fourth and cruised to a 9-2 win.
The wins for the Patriots improve their record on the season to 22-15.
Dannah Dawson got the call as game one’s starter on Thursday. Dawson pitched all seven innings and allowed three total runs, two of which were earned on six hits and two walks. She struck out nine batters.
After three scoreless innings, Springwood had the game’s first lead when they scored two runs in the fourth. The lead was short-lived, however; the Patriots scored five runs on seven hits to take a three-run lead. All seven hits came consecutively in the inning. Ashlyn Atwell, Morgan Bundy, Grace Rushing and Maggie Phelps each had RBI singles and Ally Rushing a had two-run triple.
The Patriots tacked on their final run one inning later when Avery Henderson scored on an error by the Springwood right fielder.
The Patriots finished with 11 hits in game one. Bundy, Ally Rushing, and Mallory Clifton each had two hits, while Grace Rushing, Phelps, Aubreigh Maulden, Maddi Johnson and and Atwell all had one hit.
Ally Rushing started in the pitcher’s circle in game two. Rushing pitched five innings and allowed two total runs, one of which was earned on five hits. She struck out six.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Patriots cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the inning when Bundy came around to score on an error off the bat of Ally Rushing.
In the eight-run fourth inning, the Patriots tallied eight hits. The Patriots had RBI singles by Sarah Elizabeth Calhoun, Ally Rushing, Ansley Adams and Johnson. Maulden had an RBI double in the inning and Johnson came around to score on an error.
Maulden finished 3-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Ally Rushing finished 2-3 with two RBI. Bundy, Adams, Phelps, Henderson, Johnson, Calhoun, Emily Dean and Williamson all had one hit.
The Patriots will begin postseason play on April 22.
