After years of commuting for football practice, the Charles Henderson High School football team will have a new home beginning in May.
A project three years in the making will come to a close on May 1 when the Trojans officially unveil their new on-campus outdoor practice field.
The Trojans, who in past years have had to commute to both Veterans Memorial Stadium and Charles Henderson Middle School, will now only have to walk outside their locker room for practice.
“I’m ecstatic for our kids,” said head football coach and Athletic Director Brad McCoy. “Our practice schedule has always included 20 minutes of round trip travel for two practices a day. All coaches know, time is very important in the practice plan and now having access to our own field is really going to help with the efficiency of our practices.”
The practice surface will feature natural grass and be completely irrigated. Lights may be included as part of phase two of the project at a later date.
Charles Henderson spent time traveling, loading up buses with both players and equipment for practices during spring and the season. Although McCoy appreciates the opportunity given by the University, he is excited for the next chapter.
“Troy University has been unbelievable in helping us with access of the stadium, but having our own place to practice will make a big difference. I want to personally thank our school board, Dr. (Lee) Hicks, CHHS administration, Troy University staff and Mayor Jason Reeves for all the help they have given to make this vision a reality.”
Both football and soccer teams will utilize the facility as well as all weight room classes.
