Charles Henderson begins Fort Payne tournament 1-0

The Charles Henderson Trojans knocked off Fyffe 12-6 in their opening game of the Fort Payne Tournament on Thursday night.

The Trojans scored four runs in both the second and fourth inning to pull away from Fyffe.

The win for the Trojans gives them a record of 17-4 on the season.

Walker Stallworth got the start for the Trojans. Stallworth pitched four innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. J.B. Sanders pitched two innings and allowed two runs on one hit. Jackson Giles also got in the game and pitched one inning.

The Trojans scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning. Pollard led off the inning with a triple and came around to score the game’s first run on an error. One batter later, Lawson Scarbrough smacked a single, driving in Brock Huner from third.

After Fyffe tied the game in the top of the second, the Trojans had their first of two four-run innings in the second.

Scarbrough hit a two-run single to score Darryl Lee and Chance Pollard. Charles Henderson’s next batter Cole McWhorter doubled, allowing Pollard and Scarbrough to score, giving the Trojans a 6-2 lead.

Pollard hit his second triple in the third to drive in Caden Bryan. He later came around to score on a stolen base attempt by Huner to push Charles Henderson’s lead to six runs at 8-2.

Charles Henderson’s second four-run inning came in the fourth. Will Reeves hit an RBI single, scoring J.B. Sanders. One batter later, Bryan singled, allowing Jaylen Deveridge to score. Keonte Brantley scored when Pollard was hit by a pitch and Reeves scored on a fielder’s choice to give Charles Henderson a commanding 12-2 lead.

The Trojans allowed two runs in both the fifth and seventh inning and clinched the six-run win.

The Trojans will continue play in the tournament this afternoon in Fort Payne.
