Patriots split doubleheader with Bessemer

The Pike Liberal Arts Patriots split a double header with Bessemer Academy on Friday afternoon in Bessemer.

The Patriots fell 3-2 in walk-off fashion in game one. They bounced back to win game two 10-3.

The split gives the Patriots a 17-6 record on the season.

After falling behind 2-0 early in game one, the Patriots battled back to tie it in the fourth. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Rebels had a leadoff double and won the game on a walk-off single.

Chandler Golden went the distance on the mound for the Patriots. Golden allowed three runs on 11 hits and two walks. He struck out seven Rebel batters.

Cody Hollis, Jade Sikes, Tristan Carter, Drew Nelson and Levi Sikes all had a hit for the Patriots.

The Rebels picked up single runs in both the first and second innings. The Patriots got on the board in the third on a sacrifice fly by Davis Allen. The Patriots tied the game one inning later on a Levi Sikes double to left that drove in Nelson.

The Patriots blew game two wide open with a five-run top of the seventh inning. The Rebels managed to score three runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Patriots held on to get the seven-run win.

Nelson pitched a complete game for the Patriots. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out eight batters.

The Patriots stormed out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Hollis walked with the bases loaded and Allen brought in two runners on a single to center field.

They scored two more runs an inning later. Trevor Barron singled, driving in both Golden and Nelson.

After three scoreless innings, the Patriots blew the game wide open with their five-run seventh inning. The Patriots had six hits in the inning including two RBI doubles by Max Copeland and Jade Sikes.

The Patriots will take on Tuscaloosa Academy and Coosa Valley in a double header on Saturday.
