Eagles fall to Opp

The Goshen Lady Eagles went into the bottom of the seventh tied leading the Opp Bobcats 5-4. But it was the Bobcats that walked away with a 6-5 win.

Down by one run in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bobcats put runners on third and second with nobody out. With one out in the inning, the Bobcats drove in the winning run on a grounder to second base.

The loss for the Eagles drops them to 1-3 on the season. Mary-Kaye Mills got the start for the Eagles. She pitched the game’s first four innings and allowed three runs on four hits. She struck out one. Brooke Bennett followed and pitched two innings while allowing three total runs, only one of which was earned.

Goshen scored the game’s first run in the top half of the first inning. Madison Campbell singled to right field to drive in senior Hannah Calhoun.

After both teams were scoreless in both the second and third innings, the Opp Bobcats took their first lead of the night when they scored three runs in the fourth inning on three hits.

The Eagles answered immediately with three runs in the top of the fifth to retake the lead at 4-3. Lexi McLendon doubled to left to score Bennett. Wilkes followed up with a double of her own to drive in both Campbell and McLendon.

After Opp tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles took it right back in the sixth when Bennett grounded out, allowing Calhoun to score, putting the Eagles up 5-4.

After holding Opp scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Bobcats scored two in the seventh to clinch the win.

The Eagles finished with nine hits led by Bennett, who finished 2-4 with an RBI.

The Eagles will be back in action today when they take part in the Trojan Classic at the Troy Sportsplex. They will open up the Classic against Kinston at 4:30 p.m.
