Goshen knocks off New Brockton

Lexi McLendon sent the Goshen fans home happy with a walk-off single in Tuesday night’s 6-5 win over New Brockton.

McLendon and the Eagles entered the bottom of the seventh inning tied with New Brockton at 5-5.

Hannah Calhoun led off the seventh with a single to left field. Kate Warrick followed up Calhoun’s single with a walk to put runners on second and first with nobody out. With one out in the inning, Madison Campbell singled on a hard ground ball to the shortstop, advancing both runners into scoring position. Campbell’s single set up McClendon for the game-winning hit. With a 1-0 count, McLendon hit a hard grounder towards the shortstop, allowing Calhoun to score.

McLendon got the start on the mound for the Eagles. McLendon pitched the first five innings in Goshen’s win. She allowed five total runs, three of which were earned on five hits and three walks. She struck out five batters. Hannah Calhoun came in to pitch the remaining two innings. The senior allowed just one hit and struck out six.

The Eagles finished with nine hits led by McLendon who went 3-4 with two RBI. Campbell and Warrick each finished the game with two hits. Calhoun and Morgan Wilkes each had one hit.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Campbell drove in the first run on a single to right to drive in Calhoun. In the next at-bat McLendon singled to second allowing Warrick to score from third. The Eagles scored their final run of the inning when McLendon scored on an error.

After three scoreless innings, New Brockton scored four runs in the top of fifth inning and took a 5-3 lead.

The Eagles battled back and evened the score with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Wilkes drove in both runs with a one-out single to right to drive in both McLendon and Lydia Harrison.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to take on Opp.
