Kirkpatrick lifts CHHS to victory

The Charles Henderson Trojans finished up day one of the Brew Tech Softball Tournament 1-1 on Friday night. The Trojans fell to St. James 5-4, but knocked off Elmore County 3-2 in walk-off fashion.

With the game tied at 2 in the fifth inning, Emma Kirkpatrick ripped a solo home run to left field, to give the Trojans their first win of the season.

Not only did Kirkpatrick find success at the plate, but also as the game’s starting pitcher. Kirkpatrick pitched all five innings. She allowed two runs on just one hit and one walk. Kirkpatrick struck out three batters.

The Trojans finished with six hits led by Kirkpatrick and Madison Stewart who both went 2-2.

Elmore County took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the second inning. The Trojans responded with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth inning.

The Trojans scored their first run in the third inning on an RBI single by Kirkpatrick. They evened the game an inning later when McKenzie Cain singled to left to drive in Stewart.

Kirkpatrick set down Elmore County 1-2-3 in the fifth to set up her heroics in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Trojans allowed four runs in the first inning against St. James and could never fully recover.

Stella Gilbreath got the start for the Trojans. Gilbreath gave way to Kirkpatrick and Sydni Garrett, both of whom pitched one inning.

The Trojans racked up a total of six hits in the loss. Graci Williams, AJ May, Garrett, Gilbreath, Cain and Heather Maxwell all got hits for the Trojans.

The Trojans scored their four runs on back-to-back two-run innings in the second and third innings to pull to within one at 5-4.

In the second inning, Whittaka Lowery reached on an error that allowed both Dakota Berry and Maxwell to score.

One inning later, now down three, the Trojans scored on a couple wild pitches to get back to within one.
