The Pike County Bulldogs saw their season come to a close on Tuesday night evening when the Slocomb Red Tops scored as time was set to expire in the Class 3A sub-regionals in Brundidge.
The loss for the Bulldogs ends their season after wining the area championship last week.
“We got in foul trouble early and we didn’t play the way we normally played all year,” said Bulldogs head coach Doug Holland. “I think we got out of character. Andres Burney had two fouls in the first quarter and Jaidyn Wilson had two fouls – two big players for us all year.
“Slocomb played really well and shot the ball well. They hit free throws down the stretch and that was a difference.”
Andres Burney led the Bulldogs with 13 points and was the only Pike County player to finish in double figures. Kevon Harris finished with nine points in the loss, while Jaidyn Wilson had six. Amaghie Lampley and Lawrance Silar each had five points.
The teams played to a 13-13 tie after one quarter of play. The Red Tops doubled up the Bulldogs on the scoreboard in the second quarter. They outscored the Bulldogs 14-7 and took a 27-20 lead into halftime.
Harris scored seven of his nine points in the third quarter. The Eagles used his seven points to outscore the Red Tops 14-12 and went into the fourth quarter trailing 39-32.
The Bulldogs were able to tie the game late before the Red Tops converted with less than a second remaining to earn a spot in Saturday’s Class 3A Regional semifinal.
“One thing that I’m gong to take away is the hard work that was put in,” Holland said. “For us to be better as a program, we have to learn to do the fundamental things right. Going back to the basics with defense and free throws.”
