Patriots win state tournament championship

The Pike Patriots junior varsity basketball team returned from Auburn with a state tournament championship after they knocked off Morgan Academy 37-35 in overtime on Saturday night.

It was a day full of basketball for the Patriots. In all, the Patriots played three games throughout the day beginning with a 46-7 win over Macon East in a game that started at 8:30 a.m.

The Patriots followed that up with a 40-29 win over Tuscaloosa Academy in the semifinal round.

The win matched the Patriots and Senators in a showdown for tournament championship.

Both teams ended regulation in a 34-34 tie. The Patriots outscored the Senators in overtime 3-1 in the extra session.

The Patriots had one player in double figures. Freshman Drew Nelson finished with a game-high 24 points. Jayden Jordan finished with six points.
