Patriots win two at Monroe Tournament

The Pike Patriots improved to 11-0 on Friday night after they won their two games of the Monroe Varsity Tournament.

A pair of 7-run innings were more than enough for the Pike Patriots in a 15-1 win over Monroe Academy in game one for the Patriots.

The win for the Patriots brought their win streak to double digits to start the year at 10.

The Patriots blistered Monroe with 12 hits while holding the Volunteers to just two.

Nate Renfroe got the start for the Patriots and pitched all six innings. He allowed just one earned run and struck out four batters.

The Patriots had two players with multi-hit games. Cole McWhorter and Reed Jinright each went 2-3.

The Patriots jumped on the board in the first inning when Wood Jinright grounded out first, scoring Cody Hollis.

The Patriots added seven runs in both the the second and sixth innings to end the game after six.

In the night cap the Patriots pulled out a slim 6-5 win over the Morgan Academy Senators.

Sikes got the start for the Patriots and pitched into the fifth inning before being pulled. Sikes allowed five runs, four earned on seven hits and four walks.

The Patriots finished with seven hits. Davis Allen and Hollis both finished with two hits, while Wood Jinright, Reed Jinright and Trevor Barron each had one.

The Patriots stormed out of the gates in the first inning when they scored four runs after falling behind 1-0 in the top of the inning.

Allen scored the Patriots first run on an error. Wood Jinright smacked a double to center to drive in both Hollis and Renfroe to give the Patriots a 3-1 lead. Sikes drove in Wood Jinright on a sacrifice fly to center to give the Patriots a 4-1 lead heading into the second.

The Senators once again got on the board in the second to cut into the Patriots lead. The Patriots got the run back in the bottom of the second when Cason Murphree scored on a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 5-2.

Morgan scored the next three runs of the game to even things up at five a piece.

For the third time in the game, the Patriots immediately responded in their half of the inning when Wood Jinright scored what would be the winning run on a ground out by Holt Steed.

The Patriots will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to take on Macon East.
