The Troy Recreation Center will once again play host to the Troy Parks and Recreation Summer Basketball Camp.
The camp will run from July 24 through July 27. Charles Henderson Middle School basketball coach Justin Cope will lead the camp.
“It’s one of the biggest things around the city for our kids,” Cope said. “They ask about year-round every day. A lot of people try to get in touch with me and they are always asking about the camp.”
Participants in the camp will get instruction from the volunteers and they will learn the art of passing, shooting, defense and other fundamentals.
“We are going to stress the fundamentals, because if you can’t do the fundamentals it’s hard to play basketball,” Cope said. “We are going to teach them passing, dribbling and shooting. We are also going to teach them life lessons. We want them to be successful on the court, but off the court as well. We have kids that play other sports and we want to instill a work ethic.”
Throughout the camp, the campers will have the opportunity to win prizes during competitions that will include, layups, free throw shooting and relays.
“That will probably be one of the biggest mornings of the camp,” Cope said. “The kids can’t wait until 11:15 and the last hour of camp. They love to compete and the kids love to scrimmage.”
The camp will be held for children between the ages of six through 16. Each day will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude at noon.
The camp will be $30 per child. Those interested can register at the front desk of the Troy Recreation Center. They will also be able to register on the opening day of the camp from 7 a.m. until 8 a.m.
