The American Legion Post 70 baseball team clinched the 2017 Fathers Day Classic Championship with a 2-0 win over the defending World Series Champions Texarkana on Monday.

“Overall I thought we swung the bats well, played good defense and we pitched well,” said coach Rush Hixon. “It was really a complete performance by my guys, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Both teams combined to score just two runs on 11 hits.

Jackson Byrd stole the show for Post 70. Byrd pitched all seven innings while allowing just three Texarkana hits.

“He was throwing strikes, and he found a rhythm,” Hixon said. “He was throwing every pitch for strikes and he was keeping hitters off balance.”

Post 70 finished with eight hits led by Gage Herring who went 3-4 with a run scored. Former Charles Henderson Trojan Bryson Gandy finished 2-3 while Santiago Garcia, Hunter Reeves and Jackson Tate all had one hit.

“Offensively I thought we hit the ball well,” Hixon said. “We barreled some balls up and we went right after some guys.”

Both runs came in one inning for Post 70 on Monday evening. After Casey Henderson led off the third inning with a groundout, Herring and Gandy had back-to-back base hits. With Herring on third base, Gandy advanced 90 feet when he stole second base. Garcia drove in both of them with a single up the middle giving Post 70 the 2-0 lead.

Post 70 will be back in action this evening when they host the Ozark Eagles beginning at 6:30 p.m.
