Goshen Lady Eagles advance to round two

The Goshen Lady Eagles took home a round one win over Calhoun 57-47 in the Class 2A Area 6 Tournament.
The win secures the Eagles a spot in the upcoming sub-regional tournament next week.
“We looked good for three quarters,” said Eagles head coach Fred Lowery. “We were in control for the first three quarters. We made some mistakes in the fourth, but we played pretty well.”
After Calhoun took a one-point advantage into the second quarter at 9-8, the Eagles outscored Calhoun 16-8 and took a 24-17 lead at halftime. Shamiya Griffin scored 10 points in the half, while Bree Griffin added nine.
The Eagles defense held Calhoun to just 10 third quarter points, and the Eagles led by 11 going into the final quarter.
Calhoun hit an 8-0 run, but the Eagles were able to hang on for the win.
Shamiya Giffin led the Eagles with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Bree Griffin scored 19 points and had nine points with seven assists.
The Eagles will play the winner of Central and Luverne beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday night.
“We are excited to represent Goshen and Pike County,” Lowery said. “We are playing on Friday for home court advantage.”
