Eagles down Verbena and advance to second round

The Goshen Eagles advanced to the second round of the ASHAA Class 2A State Playoffs after defeating Verbena 48-26 on Friday night.
“It was very good tonight,” said Goshen head coach Bart Snyder. “I am very proud of my guys they all worked really hard tonight. We had a good game especially in the first half. We had a dominating first half and I am proud of my guys for the work they have done.”
The Eagles scored 28 first half points beginning with a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Brock Snyder. Zach Alford scored the second touchdown on a 44 yard run to give the Eagles a 13-0 lead.
The defense got involved in the second quarter for the Eagles. Devon Bell picked off a Verbena pass and took it in the end zone for a touchdown giving the Eagles a 20-0 lead.
The Eagles took a 28-7 lead into halftime when Damion Passmore rushed one in from 14 yards out. The Eagles converted on a two-point conversion when Brian Redmond completed a pass to DaQuan Foster.
In the second half the Eagles kept up their momentum and got touchdowns on a 67-yard pass from Snyder to Passmore, an 18-yard catch by Iyan Hinkle and a 48-yard touchdown run by Alford.
The Eagles gained a total of 452 yards in the win. Snyder finished the game 8-10 passing for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Passmore finished the game with two receptions for 79 yards while Alford led the team in rushing with 212.
“We mixed up really well and we played the kind of ball that we are capable of playing,” Snyder said.
The Eagles advanced to the second round of the playoffs next Friday night where they will host Southern Choctaw.
