The Charles Henderson Trojans return home this evening to take on the Rehobeth Rebels with playoff implications on the line.
The Trojans (4-3, 2-2) fell to .500 in region play with a loss last week to rival Eufaula. This week The Trojans look to stay in the playoff race with a win over the Rebels.
The Trojans currently sit in third place with two region games left to play. The top four teams make it to the post season.
“It gets fun this time of year with only two region games left,” said Trojans head coach Brad McCoy. “The kids are thinking about the possibilities of making it to the playoffs.”
Charles Henderson High School has spent the last week on fall break, so the Trojans have been able to focus on Friday night.
“We have had three good days of practice,” McCoy said. “I think we will come out with a lot of energy. I think the kids are excited about playing at home again.”
Rehobeth (2-6, 1-3) is on the outside looking in at the playoffs this season. They enter the game on a five game losing streak.
“In the last two seasons Rehobeth has given us a tremendous football game,” McCoy said. “They always come in very motivated and ready to play us. In the last two years it has been a very close ballgame, and we have had to fight to hang on.”
The Rebels average 19 points per game this season and the Trojans expect the Rebels to attack them in many different ways.
“They give you a lot of multiple formations on offense,” McCoy said. “They put guys in different places to give guys certain matchups that they are looking for.”
Defensively, the Trojans are expecting the Rebels to come with a lot of pressure.
“They play an odd front with three down lineman and four linebackers,” McCoy said. “They bring pressure from a lot of different places. You will even see the safeties blitz a lot of time. They challenge you up front to get the ball off.”
The Trojans have won nine of the 10 meetings between the two teams, but McCoy would like to see his team come out fast in order to be successful.
“After a close game with Eufaula, we have to get our bearings straight,” McCoy said. “I think we need to come out of the gate fast. We can’t afford to come into a game like this and sputter and make mistakes on offense like we did last week. We need play sharp and limit the mistakes.”
The Trojans will hold their first annual Legacy game this evening as current Troy Trojans will play in honor and in memory on Charles Henderson alumni.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
