After beginning the year with a convincing win over Ariton last Friday, the Goshen Eagles hope to carry over that momentum into Friday’s game against Calhoun

After securing their first season opening win since 2010, the Goshen Eagles are excited for game two on Friday.

“It’s great to have that first win,” said head coach Bart Snyder. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything, but I want us to continue to get better and better.”

The Eagles (1-0) will host Calhoun (0-2) this week, and Snyder said the team has been a bit sluggish in practice. “We have had a pretty good week of practice. We have been a little sluggish after that first game.”

The Tigers enter the game after losing to Flomaton and Keith by a combined score of 104-16.

“When you play a team as athletic as Calhoun, you have to be extremely disciplined,” Snyder said. “They have struggled over the last couple of years, but that doesn’t mean they are not an athletic team.”

The Eagles are 7-1 all time against the Tigers, which includes a 36-8 win last year. “We have to focus on us and make sure we don’t make the mental mistakes,” Snyder said. “We want to get better each week, Calhoun is a very athletic competitor, but we also have some tough teams down the road.”

The Eagles will face a Tiger offensive line that is both big and physical.

Jamichael Carter leads the offense from the quarterback position. On the defense, “they have some people in some places that could cause us some problems, if you don’t go in with the right frame of mind,” Snyder said.

Last week Goshen running backs Zach Alford, Damion Passmore and DaQuan Foster rushed for a total of 232 yards, and Snyder said he expects the lean on the trio again this week.

“We were pleased with what we saw,” Snyder said. “There is always competition for who is going to start. They work and compete with each other to be the best.”

And, Snyder is hopeful the energy from the game one win will bring momentum to the team.

“That was game one,” Snyder said. “Everyone forgets game one when you get to games 9 and 10.”

The Tigers and the Eagles will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday at Eagles Stadium in Goshen.
