Troy freshman running Jabir Frye wasn’t present on the depth chart in the 2016 Trojan media guide, but after an impressive fall camp, the freshman is starting to turn some heads.

Frye comes to Troy after playing three years at Escambia High School in Pensacola, Florida.

Frye finished career at Escambia with 3,936 all-purpose yards and had 1,125 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns as a senior

“He is fast,” said head coach Neal Brown. “From signing day on, we talked about his speed. He is not big but he’s fast. And he is someone that will add a different dimension for us.”

During Troy’s first scrimmage of the camp, Frye rushed for two touchdowns.

On Saturday Frye was back on the field in Troy’s second and final scrimmage of the camp.

“He was really good last week,” Brown said. “We got him the ball in space. Today (Saturday) we didn’t try to feature him as much. He had a really nice kick off return. He had a couple MA’s (missed assignments) offensively. He didn’t have the same concentration level he had last week. He is a guy we are going try and get into space. We are going give him touches. He has earned that right in fall camp.”

Frye came out with the attitude and mindset to simply make a play during the two scrimmages.

“I just came out here with the right mindset,” Frye said. “I just tried to make a play whenever I had the chance.”

Frye ran the 100-meter dash in 10.5 to 10.6 seconds while at Escambia. But even with that speed, adjusting to the speed of the game has been a process.

“The biggest adjustment from high school to Division 1 football is there is a slight speed adjustment,” Frye said. “Everybody on defense has their own assignment, so it’s more of trying to figure out what they are going to do and try to counter it.”

Along with playing running back in high school, Frye also contributed on special teams. He had two punt returns for touchdowns as well as a kick off return.

“I think I can bring special plays,” Frye said. “Last year coach told me they weren’t ranked too high when it came to kick returns, so I plan on making an impact this season.”

Catching the ball out of the backfield and lining up in the slot as a receiver is also something Frye is ready to do.

“That formation (Wing T) is something that we actually ran in high school,” Frye said. “I am very comfortable with that.”

Frye will be behind Jordan Chunn and Andre Flakes who are sure to get the bulk of the carries in 2016, but that didn’t stop them from helping Frye out during camp.

“It has been great,” Frye said. “I like how they try and help me in the best way possible. They have helped me a lot during fall camp after I came out shaky. They brought me along.”

Frye hopes to make an immediate impact starting on Sept. 3 when Troy hosts Austin Peay at 5 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
