The Charles Henderson High School football staff will be hosting the first annual Brad McCoy Youth Football Camp this Saturday at Charles Henderson Middle School.

The camp will be held for kids in first through the sixth grade.

“This is something that I think is a necessity when it comes to a football program trying to give back to a community,” McCoy said. “We are trying to offer a camp where we can put some of our coaches and some of our younger players around the youth and let them know what it’s like to be coached by high school coaches.”

The camp will run from 8 a.m. until noon, and the participants will learn football fundamentals, tackling lessons and speed drills as well as ball handling, throwing techniques and passing.

“We are going to try and give them an overview of what it takes to develop into a football player,” McCoy said. “It is some of the things that we work on everyday with our own kids.”

The goal is to show the fun side of the game football.

“There are so many things these days for kids to do,” McCoy said. “We lose some kids to all the technology. We have to get out there and let these kids see us and say ‘I know Coach McCoy and Coach Dunn’ and hopefully when they get older, the more and more we do this, we would have already laid down the foundation.”

McCoy said coaches seek to foster an interest in playing football. “We want them to understand that it can be a safer sport to play than maybe what they hear about. We want to teach them some things that they can take with them to their rec ball teams to help them develop into a better football player,” McCoy said.

The camp costs $25. Camp fees include lunch, a t-shirt and a camp photo. Participants can register for the camp by emailing coach McCoy at mccoyb@troyschools.net and payments can be made the day of camp.
