Ponytails advance to state tournament championship

The Troy Ponytails advanced to the championship round of the Ponytails State Tournament after defeating Dothan 7-4 on Monday morning.

Monday’s contest was a rematch of a game on Saturday that saw Dothan defeated Troy by one run.

“We played very well defensively,” said head coach Matt Leverette. “We continued our good hitting. It was good to have the opportunity to beat Dothan after losing a one-run game to them on Saturday.

On Monday Troy sent Morgan Bundy to start the game. She pitched the game’s first four innings and allowed four hits and two walks she also struck out four. Sadie Leverette finished out the game by throwing the final two innings. She allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three.

Troy had their first three batters, McKenzie Cain Bundy, and Emily Williamson and all three runs came across to score. Emily B also reached base and came around to score the fourth run of the inning to give Troy a 4-0 lead.

Dothan answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning making the score 4-1 heading into the second inning. After Dothan scored two runs in the second, Troy added two more runs in the third when Bundy and Emily both got on base and came around to score to increase their lead to 6-3.

Dothan scored their final run of the game in the third inning and with Troy holding a 6-4 lead in the final inning, they scored their final run of the contest when Bundy once again reached base and came around to score.

Bundy finished the game going 3-3 with a double and a triple. Emily Williamson went 2-3, while Madison Campbell finished with a triple and Leverette had a triple.

Troy with the win advances to play in the championship game on Tuesday at 11 a.m. against the winner of Montgomery Gray and Montgomery American.
