Troy American Legion Post 70 won both games on the first day of the Auburn University Showcase on Monday after defeating Demarini 11-3 and TPL Elite 5-4.

“We played well,” said Troy Post 70 General Manager John Rushing. “We struggled a little bit defensively which is usually one of our strong suits. Pitching picked us up and in the first game our hitting pulled us through.”

Robert Williams got the start for Troy Post 70, pitching five innings and giving up five hits with three strikeouts.

Casey Henderson led the way at the plate finishing 3-3 with two singles and a double. Logan Thompson finished 2-3 with a single and a double. Chandler Davis also finished with two hits in three at bats with two singles.

Troy Post 70 scored one in the first, three in the second and one each in both the third and the fourth innings. Troy Post 70 slammed the door shut on Demarini in the fifth when they added five runs to go up 8-3 to end the game.

In game two Troy Post 70 had to come back from four runs down to earn a 5-4 win.

Troy Post 70 was down 4-3 in the sixth inning when John Miller came up to bat and hit a three-run home run to left center field to give Troy Post 70 the lead.

Chase Hartley came in relief and got the win after throwing three scoreless innings and allowing one hit.

“He came in there and completely shut them down,” Rushing said. “That gave us a chance to get back in the game.”

Hartley also did it with the bat in game two. He finished 2-3 with a single and a double. Logan Thompson and Joey Wozniak also had RBI singles in the game.

With the two wins Troy Post 70 finds themselves with an overall record of 16-3 and after losing two of their first three games. Rushing likes where his team is currently at.

“I like how they are setting up moving forward,” Rushing said. “I feel really good about it. It’s the most pitching we have had in the four years that we have had this team. Hopefully that will give us a chance whereas in year’s past we just didn’t have the depth on the mound.”

Troy Post 70 will continue the Auburn University Showcase on Tuesday when they play the East Cobb Astros at 4:30 p.m.
