Charles Henderson High School center fielder Bryson Gandy was selected as a member of the 2106 Class 5A All-State second team on Saturday, while Goshen pitcher Landon Wilks was named as an alternate on the Class 2A All-State team.

Junior centerfielder Gandy was a go-to player for the Trojans.

“We needed for him to perform, and he did,” Teal said. “He performed both defensively and offensively. He even had some good outings on the mound for us. He is a one of a kind athlete for us. He is probably one of our more athletic players, and he was able to figure out a lot of stuff for us this year. It was fun to watch.”

Gandy finished the year with a .406 batting average with one home run and 21 RBIs. He also stole more than 20 bases.

As a junior Gandy was looked upon as leader for the Trojans. Playing up the middle as a defender, Teal looked for Gandy to take charge and be the leader in the outfielder.

“You have to have confidence in your players you have out there,” Teal said. “There was no doubt in my mind that when a ball was hit to him that it was going to get caught.”

Teal believes that Gandy has the opportunity to turn into a five-tool player at Charles Henderson. Gandy can play defense, has a good arm, can steal bases and he can hit average. The one thing missing is his power, but as an upcoming senior, Teal thinks the power will come.

“He has the power, he just didn’t get the right pitches to show it,” Teal said. “I would say he is a solid four-tool guy. He has room to grow with the power. He still has another year. He has the last year to grow and develop.”

Wilks finished the season with Eagles as coached Robby Kinsaul’s number one pitcher. Wilks went 4-4 on the season with a 1.87 ERA with 92 strikeouts and just 20 walks.

“We are very excited for him,” Kinsaul said. “I was getting anxious to hear back, and I was really excited to see his name on the list. I was glad to get one player on the list. It says a lot about our program.”

All coaches look for a solid number on starter to bolster a starting rotation, and Kinsaul had that with Wilks.

“We felt like he was our number one starter,” Kinsaul said. “We had a really good feeling that we would win a ball game every time he stepped foot on the mound. I was really proud with the amount of progress he made from summer to this past season.”

According to Kinsaul, Wilks ran into a bit of bad luck in a couple of games. His sub .200 ERA speaks largely to how he was able to minimize the damage and get out of innings when needed.

“There was some games where we didn’t play good defense behind him,” Kinsaul said. “He learned a valuable lesson about keeping his head in the game. He can’t control that stuff. He can only control what happens on the mound, and I though he did a good job with that. “

Wilks makes the fifth Goshen player in the last six years to be named either first or second team, or honorable mention for All-State.

“Maybe the guys that are seeing it can realize that they can have their name on that list as well if they work hard enough,” Kinsaul said.
