It wasn’t easy, but the Charles Henderson Lady Trojans stayed perfect in the summer season with a 46-42 overtime win over area foe Eufaula.

“This is a rivalry game regardless if it’s in the summer or during the season,” said Trojans head coach Dyneshia Jones on Wednesday. “We both have the same players we are going to have during the season. It’s always going to be a rivalry.”

Both teams struggled out of the gates and struggled holding on to the basketball. The teams combined to score just 14 points in the opening quarter, with the Tigers holding an 8-6 lead.

The Trojans began to pick up in the second and scored 23 points to take a 29-16 lead at the half. The Tigers stormed back in the fourth quarter and scored with just seven seconds remaining to even the score, forcing the game into overtime.

Go-to players Tatyana Siler, Niaira Jones, and Maori Davenport were able to secure the four-point win over the rival Tigers.

“They are who I depend on,” Jones said. “I look at them because of experience. That is who I want to get the ball to.”

Davenport led the way in scoring for the Trojans with 16 points, while Jones and Siler finished with 12 and 13 points.

“Throughout the scrimmage there was a lot of turnovers between both teams,” Jones said. “They were taking advantage of them, especially late in the game.”

Although mistakes are common in the summer months, that doesn’t mean that Jones is OK with the errors.

“I don’t like it,” Jones said. “As a coach I kind of feel like we lost, even though we didn’t. It lets me know that we need to spend more time on dribbling and passing.”

The Lady Trojans will be back in action on Thursday evening when they host Wilcox Central.

The boys will start the triple-header at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity girls and varsity boys.

“It’s going to be three good games,” Jones said. “They used to be in our area years ago. It’s a great team with great coaches so it’s going to be a good game. We’re trying to get the fans to come and check them out.”
