The Charles Henderson Trojans concluded their 2016 spring schedule with a game against the Williamson Lions on Saturday.

The second string fell to the Lions 12-3 in the first quarter before the first string Trojans defeated the Lions 14-12 in three quarters.

“I am pleased to come out of the spring with a win, because you don’t have that sour taste in your mouth,” said Trojans head coach Brad McCoy. “We get to head into the summer with a little more confidence. We played early on like we didn’t have any. We have a long way to go with our young kids and I was pleased with how the older guys responded.”

The younger players for the Trojans just managed to score three points, a 26-yard field goal by Cameron Bush. Quarterback Brock Huner completed one of his four pass attempts, which included an interception, and quarterback Christian Andrews finished his outing 0-3.

The first string came into the game in the second quarter and fell behind 6-0 before storming back to score the next 14 points and hung on to the win.

“In a normal situation you get to plan,” McCoy said. “You get to watch tape. Here we were flying blind for the first to or three series. We got a better bead on exactly what they were doing, and the kids started to gain more confidence.

Noah Lowery got the snaps in the final three quarters and went 7-10 for 105 yards with two touchdowns, one of which came on a run from two-yards out. Lowery’s first touchdown was a pass to DQ Toney for 75 yards.

Jared Wilson led the team in rushing on Saturday night. He finished with 96 yards on 16 carries.

“Jared ran with a lot of emphasis,” McCoy said. “He runs low. He looked really good coming off a knee injury like he is dong. You want guys who want the football and we all of our guys want the ball. I am very proud of him.”

Jabronski Williams added 29 yards on six carries and Bryson Gandy had three carries for 13 yards.

With the spring schedule now in the rearview mirror coach McCoy and the Trojans will now look ahead to the start of summer, which is set to begin on June 6.

“We got better,” McCoy said. “I think the morale of our football team and program is where we need it to be. We had a good middle school spring and a good varsity spring. We left it healthy which is something you look for. We have a lot of motivation heading into June 6 to get better.”
