The Charles Henderson men’s golf team closed out the season at the Sub-State Golf Tournament at the Troy Country Club on Monday.

The Trojans shot a combined 400, while winning team St Paul’s shot a 300.

“The guys played really hard and I am extremely proud of them,” said Trojans head coach Shelby Tuck. “I knew we had a tough task in front of us and they showed up for the challenge and played the best they could.”

The top two teams in the tournament advanced to the state tournament. Clay Central and Helena had to go to a sudden death playoff to see who else would advance with Clay Central coming out on top.

Austin Blake of Helena won the top individual spot with a 75.

Griffin McCrary led the way for the Trojans by shooting an 84. McCrary battled back after shooting a 10 over par on the front nine and shot a two over on the back.

“He is one of those kids that stayed in there and did what he normally does,” Tuck said. “He played great golf on the back nine to put together a great round.”

In the end it was trouble on the greens that hurt the Trojans on Monday.

“We left a lot of puts out there,” Tuck said. “We weren’t’ really on our short game today.”

Lone Female Lindsay Lee competed in the sub state tournament as well on Monday at Lagoon Park Country Club in Montgomery.

Lee finished the day in third place, one spot shy of advancing to the state tournament. Lee ended her tournament with a 91.

“Lindsay is one of those kids that fights, fights, and fights,” Tuck said. “She fell a little short. I am proud of her. I commend her for her efforts.”

In the end, Monday’s tournament was a stepping-stone for a group of young Trojan golfers.

“This is a great foundation,” Tuck said. “We have been working on this for the past three to four years and every year we have gotten better. We have to keep working and building on the momentum that we have created for the golf program.”
